Great things are happening at Nursery Road Elementary! In our eyes, these students, educators, and facility managers are Champions!

Check out some of there outstanding initiatives!

  • Students crush all aluminum cans and plastic bottles before they are put in the recycling truck. This allows the cans and bottles to take up less space, so the truck holds more and has to make fewer trips back and forth from the schools to the recycling center. Crushing cans and bottles results in saved energy and gas.  In 2010-2011, Sonoco Recycling picked up 7 full containers of crushed cans and bottles.

  • In 2008-2009, students also began encouraging our teachers and families to use CFL's light bulbs because they conserve energy and last 10 times as long as incandescent bulbs. Many families signed a pledge to change out at least one light bulb in their homes. Teachers were provided with free CFL's to change our bulbs in their classrooms. Go NRES Conserving Champions!

  • NRES recycles mostly white and colored paper, newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles and aluminum cans.  On a weekly basis, the students collect and source separate materials from classrooms.

  • Before the winter holidays, the art and recycling students came together for a creative venture.  Recycled cans were spray-painted with red or white paint. Students turned the smashed shape of a recyclable can into expressive ornaments.  What a nifty way to reuse aluminum or tin cans!
